New Year’s resolution: Organizing your closet

January 6, 2012

The beginning of a new year often prompts people to set goals and resolutions for the year ahead.

While any mom pursuing a college degree has clearly set a very large goal for herself, student parents may want to resolve to do things that will make their lives easier during this busy time of their lives.

Starting off the new year with a clean, organized closet is one resolution that can give moms going to college a clean, fresh start to 2012.

There are several ways to go about tackling this job. Many experts suggest going through every piece of clothing you own and eliminating items that you haven't worn for the past year. Assess the condition of these discarded items to decide whether you want to sell them to a thrift or consignment store, give them away to someone you know, donate them to charity or throw them away.

Take out-of-season items out of the equation and put them into boxes to store until you'll need them to further eliminate clutter. Depending on where you live, you probably won't be needing many of your summer items all winter long.

Organizing the remaining items is next. Parenting.com and GoodHousekeeping.com recommend throwing away wire and other mismatched hangers and opting for one matching type to make your space more orderly.

Deciding how to arrange items is also important. Some people prefer putting all of their tops together, dresses together, pants together, etc. Others prefer hanging coordinating items together to make finding an outfit each morning easier.

Hanging hooks for purses, belts and scarves can also add to the closet's overall organization. And, getting your shoes off the ground by installing a shoe rack can make a big difference.

While this job may be an overwhelming undertaking for some people, remember that the time before a new semester starts is ideal for tackling these types of projects.
After all, a clean closet can make a big difference in your overall stress level throughout the semester and allow you to focus on being the best student and parent you can be.

Luckily, a variety of scholarships for mothers, grants for parents and other financial aid is available to help take some of the financial stress of getting a college education away as well!
