Single moms with college scholarships stay fit this season

November 26, 2012

It's cold out, the holidays are approaching, life is getting more stressful with a college scholarship to balance against kids and chores, and now single moms need to worry about watching their weight, too. It can be hard when it doesn't feel like there's enough time in the day to plan or prepare healthy meals, but there are some ways to do it without breaking the bank.

•Creative workouts are a useful tool. You can sit in a more active position or even do crunches while reading if you prop up a book, or if you take time out to watch television, be sure to incorporate physical activity. Even some video games require movement now - the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 both require a lot of movement, and these also provide outlets for single moms with college scholarships to spend time with their children.

•Be careful with the coffee. Livestrong wrote that while it may be good for getting heart rates elevated a little, coffee dehydrates and may also kill appetite for a short time. Drinking coffee on an empty stomach first thing in the morning may not agree with everyone and could even slow down a morning commute, so be sure to have something else for breakfast.

•Eat more of the turkey and less of the stuffing. This applies to every holiday party and not just Thanksgiving dinner. Lean meats are the way to go, and with these sources in such heavy supply this season, it's better to ignore the cranberry sauce and pie, push the stuffing off the plate and eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and meat options. With all that tryptophan in their systems, kids may even go to bed early, giving single moms more opportunity to study and help their college scholarships.

•Avoid alcohol and other similar substances. While wine is customary as a toasting option and cocktails are regularly served at many corporate functions, which may be thrown by an employer or a school, these are calorie-laden diet traps. On top of that, while a little bit may be healthful, too much is bad for overall health and can have negative impacts on the current situation, tomorrow's studying and long term relationships.
