Setting a good example for your children

May 29, 2012

As parents, we strive to be good role models for our kids. However, many moms tend to put plans for themselves on hold after they have children.

Pursuing a college degree is one of the goals that may get put on the proverbial back burner until the kids are a little older, as it involves a large financial and time commitment. But research from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has found that fulfilling your dream of becoming a college graduate is beneficial for your children.

The organization reports that your level of educational attainment can influence your children's desire to get a college degree. For example, in 1999, 82 percent of students whose parents held a bachelor's degree or higher enrolled in college immediately after finishing high school. The rates were much lower for those whose parents had completed high school but not college (54 percent) and even lower for those whose parents had less than a high school diploma (36 percent).

In addition, moms who earn a college degree set a great example for their children by modeling study habits, hard work and dedication as well as showing them the importance of education.

According to Distance-Education.org, parents demonstrate the importance of education to their children by showing them education is a priority. Additionally, many children of parents who went back to school have high respect for their parents' sacrifices and are likely to make education a priority for themselves, according to the website.

Moms who want to pursue a college degree should know that there are many ways they can get help paying for their education including scholarships for mothers and government grants for single moms. In addition, financial aid for college can make college more affordable.
