Searching for a budget-friendly Father’s Day gift?

June 14, 2012

A new survey conducted by the National Retail Federation (NRF) reveals that children of all ages are planning on spending more than ever on their dads this Father's Day.

The NRF's 2012 Father's Day survey found that gift-givers will spend an average of $117.14 on gifts for dear old dad - a figure that's up 10 percent over last year and the highest amount in eight years.

As for what dads can expect to get this holiday, the survey found that consumers will spend an estimated $2.3 billion on taking their father's to a special event, such as a sporting game, concert or golf outing. Other expected big-sellers include electronics, gift cards, apparel, sporting goods, books and music.

"It should come as no surprise that dads are considerably more laid back when it comes to their special day, opting most times to simply spend quality time with loved ones at a restaurant or at home in the backyard," said BIGinsight Consumer Insights director Pam Goodfellow. "But this Father's Day it's evident that consumers want to thank dad for the support and undivided attention he provides throughout the year."

Moms pursuing a college education may be worried about finding a budget-friendly gift for their husband, father, grandfather or other special dad in their lives.

However, most men will admit that they don't want or need another tie, mug, T-shirt or other regular gift. In fact, they might appreciate handmade gifts such as pictures, cards and poems as well as promises to help with household chores or to play a game together more than anything else.

A great, budget-friendly idea is to interview your young children about their dad's favorite things and why they have the best dad ever. Transcribe their responses and wrap it up for a nice presentation.

Giving a heartfelt card and planning a special Father's Day meal is also a great idea, as it shows that you really care.

Budget-friendly store-bought gifts include books, CDs or a gift card in any amount you can afford. For example, a $10 gift card to his favorite coffee shop buys him a few cups while a $10 gift card to the car wash takes a household responsibility off of his to-do list.

Remember that it's not the gift itself, but the thought that counts. As a mother pursuing a college education, you are making sacrifices now to ensure a brighter future for yourself and your family. Luckily, financial aid for mothers, college scholarships and grants can help make your dream a reality.
