Save money on textbooks

December 9, 2011

Mothers going to college often get help paying for their education through single mother scholarships, grants and other financial aid. However, many still have to adhere to a strict budget to make ends meet while they are in school.

One of the biggest expenses college students of all ages have is their textbooks. According to CBS Moneywatch, the average student can expect to spend more than $1,100 on textbooks each year. But there are ways to cut down on this expense.

Like anyone trying to adhere to a budget, experts suggest individuals shopping for textbooks look around for the best price. After all, the school bookstore is not the only place to buy the book(s) you'll need. Websites such as Amazon.com and CampusBooks.com also sell college textbooks, according to the news source.

Many students also choose to rent books rather than buying them to save money. Renting books through websites such as Chegg.com can save students considerably over buying them.

Purchasing used books is also a good money-saving option, as is sharing a textbook with another student.

The break between semesters is a good time to start shopping for textbooks. CBS Marketwatch reports that a new federal law requires textbook publishers to provide students with the list of required textbooks during registration.

If you purchased books last semester, remember to sell them back and use the money you get towards the new batch of books you'll need.
