How much studying is realistic?

Moms who are considering going to college often spend a lot of time weighing the pros and cons of taking on such a big commitment. Many who have been out of school for a long time often worry about just how much time will be needed to devote to school work outside of the classroom.

While the time students spend on homework, studying and other assignments varies greatly by person, a recent study found which college majors require the most - and least - studying each week.

The annual National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) found that full-time college students study for an average of 15 hours a week.

Individuals majoring in engineering spend the most time studying. The NSSE found that these students study for an average of 19 hours each week on their homework.

Other majors that require a large amount of studying include physical sciences (18 hours per week), biological sciences (17 hours per week) and arts & humanities (17 hours per week).

Those who spend the least amount of time studying included education majors (15 hours per week), social sciences majors (14 hours per week) and business majors (14 hours per week).

The survey also found that 22 percent of students entering college expect paying for their education to be "very difficult." Mothers returning to school have several different options available to help them finance their college education and pursue their dreams, including grants for parents, college scholarships and other financial aid.
