The most popular college majors

December 13, 2011

Many moms pursuing a college degree do so because they want to fulfill a dream of working in a particular job or industry when they graduate.

However, many simply want to get a degree to increase their earning potential and be better able to support their families.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in 2010 individuals with a bachelor's degree made an average of $1,038 per week, compared to $767 per week for those with an associate's degree, $712 per week for those with some college (but no degree) and $626 per week for those with a high school diploma.

Those considering enrolling in either a traditional or online college or university but who don't have a clear idea of what they should study may be curious about the most popular majors among current students.

According to CollegeStats.org, the most common majors among college students in the U.S. include biology, business, communications, computer science, criminal justice, elementary education, marketing, nursing, psychology and sociology.

While many schools offer these areas of study as majors, potential students can find which schools offer majors they are interested in by searching online at websites such as CollegeNavigator.com.

Although it isn't necessary to decide upon a major before enrolling in college, it is necessary to secure financing to help pay for your education. Mothers returning to college can get help with this part of their education with various grants for parents, college scholarships and other financial aid.
