Organization tips for college moms

July 16, 2012

Returning to school can be hard to balance with the responsibilities of motherhood, but staying organized can make it work. Here are some tips to consider when enrolled in university as a parent:

Study space
The easiest way to ensure that your class project doesn't become your child's next art project is to create an area specifically for your course materials. Whether a desk in your living room or a counter in your kitchen, a space for your school supplies will help you keep track of them. When you need to quietly study, you can use this area to do your work - everything you need will already be at hand. If the library or local cafe is a better homework location for you, store all your materials in a backpack and head out for a few hours when necessary. A place off-limits to your children may be the best spot for you to study.

Calendar
Owning a daily planner or a calendar can help you know when your assignments are due and plan accordingly. This way, you won't have three papers to write the same weekend as your child's soccer tournament. Record when project due dates as well as when you have class and other activities. Decide when you intend to work on certain projects so you can space out your time.

Folders and notebooks
If you're enrolled in several classes, having separate folders, notebooks or binders for each course can help you keep track of all your course materials and syllabuses. Dividers within a binder or multiple folders for papers and tests can add to your organization. Maintaining some kind of order for your papers can be of great assistance when you need to review for midterms or finals.

In class, try to write notes neatly and organized in a way that you, at least, can comprehend later. If you struggle with creating legible handwriting or fear that your children will color over your notes, see if a tape recorder at lectures works for you.

Finances
In addition to monitoring your course load and schedule, be sure your college-related finances are in order. Keep an organized folder for applications, such as scholarships and financial aid for moms, and make photocopies of key documents before dropping them in the mail. Organizing your life can take some time, but it also can help you succeed as a mom returning to school.
