Keeping everyone happy: How can you study and keep your kids occupied?

November 15, 2011

While financing a college degree is made easier through various college scholarships, grants for parents and other financial aid, many mothers returning to school face a variety of daily challenges related to balancing motherhood with being a student. Figuring out how and where to study while keeping little ones happy is one of these challenges.

Obviously, carving out homework or study time for yourself when your children are at school, daycare or otherwise occupied by someone else is ideal. However, this is not always the case. And hiring a babysitter every time you need to hit the books can be expensive!

One way to ensure your kids are cared for and occupied while you're studying is to set up a childcare exchange with another student parent. This arrangement allows individuals to take turns caring for each other's kids so you can study.

Setting up a homework play date with another student parent who has children similar in age can also be helpful, as it keeps the kids occupied with each other while the adults get some time to work.

Bringing your little ones to places such as an indoor play space can also give you some much needed time to study. Although it may not be a library-like setting, these areas keep kids happy, occupied and contained so you can get some school work done.
