Balancing night classes with kids at home
August 3, 2011
It's no secret that mothers who want to go back to school to finish their degree or further their education are at a disadvantage compared to their single classmates. Fighting the guilt of leaving your kids at home while you head off to school on your own may not sound like the motherly thing to do, but in many ways it's a necessary sacrifice to make their lives better.
Once you have this mindset, you can find creative ways to get around your college schedule. Set aside a night during the week that will be primarily a family night, so you can hear about what's going on at school and still play an active role in your children's lives. Online degrees offer the opportunity for an even more flexible schedule.
Hiring a family friend to babysit for a night or two a week and splitting up time at a sibling or parent's house could be the ideal way to give your kids the support system they need. After all, your college education is a temporary step that will enrich all of your lives.
With the ever-expanding options for college scholarships and grants for single parents, there's no reason why you can't follow your dreams.
