A study guide for moms in college

September 18, 2012

One of the biggest things single moms miss when they are at work or in school is their kids. Finding time to spend with children can be hard. Balancing one or two other full-time responsibilities on top of home life, and the stress of these kinds of situations can have a big impact on the quality of schoolwork and life in general. However, there are ways to integrate school and kids without losing out on either opportunity.

Make a schedule

Having a set time for doing homework and reading textbooks can make it easier to manage parenting and academics. This could be mommy's quiet time, offering kids a distraction like coloring books, video games or arts and crafts that will keep them quiet and indoors where they are easier to monitor without constant supervision. This will mean fewer distractions and less noise while still having the proximity that studying in a library or away from the family would lack.

Creating schedules can also help give kids structure in their lives, a substantial bonus in homes with only one parent. Feeling alone or abandoned can lead children to develop negative behaviors, and finding more time to spend with them, like being at home while studying, can cultivate a more stable living environment.

Include children

School-aged children, even those in elementary school, are given homework and projects on a daily basis. Making a set studying time for the whole family will include kids in the learning process while encouraging them to follow through on their studies. It also means that moms can help with homework while not losing any time on their own projects. What's more, the impulse to finish early or put off assignments will fade when the added incentive of spending time with the kids is added in, ensuring longer hours with textbooks, more practice on subject matter and ultimately better grades in the long run.

Kids are the best study buddies, especially when they have work of their own to complete. Setting a good example is important to moms, and maintaining scholarships for moms will require dedication and attention to detail with grades and academic performance. The added motivation of showing children how to be a good student and the benefits of succeeding in school can help ensure that coursework is completed timely and accurately. The best part is, when the work is done, mom can devote that extra time to spending with the family.
