Tech-savvy students fuel popularity of tablets

May 2, 2012

A new survey conducted by the Pearson Foundation reveals that many college students are embracing technology through the use of tablets.

More than 1,200 college students were polled for the survey, which was conducted by Harris Interactive. This marks the second year this survey has been done.

The survey revealed that tablet ownership among college students has more than tripled from a year ago. One quarter of college students now own these devices, compared to just 7 percent in 2011. Additionally, a large number of students plan to purchase a tablet within the next six months.

What exactly are they using these devices for? The survey found that 90 percent of those who have them say tablets are valuable for educational purposes.

"I'm able to carry everything with me easily," University of Florida freshman Abbey Konchan told Fox News. "I only need my iPad for class and everything is in one place."

The news provider reports that college students are using tablets to take notes in class, study for tests and read textbooks.

The survey also revealed that more than six in 10 college students agree that tablets help them study more efficiently. Additionally, 63 percent said they believe that tablets will effectively replace textbooks as we know them today within the next five years. And, 83 percent said that tablets encourage students to buy digital textbooks instead of print textbooks.

Moms who rely on grants for parents and other college scholarships to help finance their college education may find a tablet to be a worthwhile investment for their college years and beyond.
