Stay comfortable this winter on campus

November 29, 2012

Being uncomfortable in the classroom can easily lead to distraction, and single moms with college scholarships need to pay close attention. They have so much riding on them and so many factors in the balance that little things like being too cold shouldn't be allowed to interfere with the learning process. There are plenty of obstacles in the path to higher education, but knowing what some of these are can help moms plan ahead and avoid them as best they can.

•Bring a snack to class in case hunger strikes. Just because a single mom grabbed a bite heading out the door to drop the kids off at school and daycare doesn't mean that will tie her over until lunch. Around 10am, stomachs might start churning, which can be a physical and auditory distraction - nothing can be quite as embarrassing as the sound of a tummy growling. Having healthy options ready can get moms focused back on the lecture.

•Wear layers even if it looks warm and sunny. Just because the forecast says 65 and partly cloudy doesn't mean it won't get colder later in the day or a sudden storm won't kick up. A light windbreaker and a compact umbrella can make all the difference between shivering and cold for an entire lecture, or feeling warm and ready to focus in another.

•Wear appropriate clothing for the day and setting. While one top may look much prettier than another, if it sends the wrong message about a single mom, teachers may think she's not being serious about her education and may feel less inclined to offer assistance with course materials. It's also good to consider what events are happening later in the day, since most moms won't have time to go home and change into more business-appropriate attire before heading to the job after class.

•Never wear something just because it's comfortable. Try to avoid workout clothing or similar articles like Jeggings, as these can create a negative impression on fellow students as well as teachers. Moms need to dress the way they want to be perceived, so picking less casual attire will show anyone looking that they are taking their college scholarships and obligations to their families very seriously.
