Online classes give moms a second chance
October 8, 2012
For mothers with scholarships there can be many reasons why attending college in-person just won't work. Some are too far from a college to make commuting a reasonable choice. Others work full-time and can't attend during regular hours. Another group feels it's more important to stay home and raise the kids. Fortunately for all single moms, the internet provides a gateway to almost any school in the world, due to the online degree programs they offer.
Getting on the internet
The current volume of technology is so great that nearly every person in the world has some sort of electronic element they use on a daily basis. Cell phones, computers, smartphones, laptops and tablets are commonplace items that provide essential gateways to higher education, which some women may take for granted.
Just like regular colleges, some of these entities provide private funding for single moms, while others simply accept scholarships for moms that are gained by personal effort and other achievements. This allows single moms to worry less about funding and more about classwork. It also means that fees and other expenses may be somewhat lower for traditional students, as distance learners have different tools and work materials than others and can find alternative ways of getting coursework done.
Keeping the support
Just because moms are taking classes online doesn't mean they are on their own, however. There are plenty of groups, both on the internet and in real life, that gather for study groups and college interests.
"I guess my biggest piece of advice [to make it through] is to have a support system," Heather Waters told The Boston Herald. She returned to school after taking time off for a family and is now pursuing her doctorate degree at Bay State Physical Therapy, and with her four children getting ready to go off to college, she wanted to set a good example while still being able to care for them.
For single moms with college scholarships, getting an online degree can assist with continuing education while tending a family, so no facet of life gets left out or goes to waste. These programs provide the flexibility and self-structure that is so useful to single moms, where kids may need her at any moment and class time can be put on hold temporarily.
