Is an online degree right for you?

November 15, 2011

The main reason many mothers pursuing a college degree choose to take their courses online is that this allows them to work when it's convenient for them - when their kids are at school, napping or at night.

While the flexibility an online degree program offers busy moms is definitely a selling point, there are also other reasons many women choose to go the high-tech route rather than the more traditional in-person route.

According to CourseAdvisor.com, online courses are often an attractive option to mothers returning to school who are self-conscious about the age difference or other differences between themselves and other students. Because students in these courses interact online, they don't need to worry about being older than others or different in any other way.

Other benefits include the ease of getting in touch with professors via email versus waiting for in-person office hours and the overall affordability. After all, taking classes online means you don't need a car, to buy fuel or take the time to get to and from school each day.

Even though online programs tend to be less expensive than other colleges, those pursuing a degree this way can still apply for and receive various college scholarships and grants to offset the costs. It's important to remember, however, that the program must be accredited in order to qualify for federal financial aid.
