Gift ideas for college grads

May 18, 2012

Whether you're graduating from college or know someone who is, odds are you're thinking about gift ideas this time of year.

While many people don't like to expect gifts or tell people what they want, WKYC-TV News reports that gift registries are becoming more popular among those graduating.

Individuals can choose gifts for their home, themselves or even to be used in their job at their favorite stores or online through registries such as MyRegistry.com.

"One of the features that is offered is a cash gift fund and it's integrated into the registry, so you don't have to feel uncomfortable that you're asking for cash," Nancy Lee, president of MyRegistry.com, told the news provider.

She says that the website allows gift-givers to transfer cash directly into the recipient's bank account via PayPal, so there's no need to write a check or give cash.

Cash will surely be appreciated by any graduate, whether they have college loans to repay or were lucky enough to qualify for grants for parents or various college scholarships.

Gift cards will also come in handy. You can buy a generic gift card to a shopping mall, or choose one for a restaurant, favorite clothing store, department store, electronics store or even a grocery store.

Giving a new graduate a gift card to a salon or spa may also be a great idea. This way, he or she can choose which service(s) they'd like to spend the money on.

Other gifts that are good ideas for those graduating from college include interview clothes, smartphones and furniture or home decor items, according to The Augusta Chronicle.
