Cities with a lot of college grads

May 29, 2012

As the 2011-2012 school year comes to an end, many new college grads are moving into the next phase of their lives. For most, regardless of their age or whether or not they have children, this means finding a job.

While the job market remains challenging, it may be helpful to know what kind of competition you face in your area when it comes to others with a college degree.

The Business Journal's "On Numbers" blog recently analyzed U.S. Census Bureau Data in order to identify the most educated cities in the nation. The list identifies the metropolitan areas with the greatest number of 18 to 34-year-old bachelor's degree holders.

Topping the list is Boston, Massachusetts. BizJournals.com reports that nearly two-fifths (39.2 percent) of those between the ages of 18 and 34 are college grads in "Beantown." Perhaps the fact that the city and its surrounding towns house 85 private colleges and universities has helped contribute to the large concentration of educated young people.

Other cities with a lot of young college grads include Washington, D.C.; San Francisco, California; San Jose, California; Madison, Wisconsin and New York City.

On the other hand, various cities in California, Florida and Texas have the lowest concentration of young college degree holders. They include Bakersfield, California; Lakeland, Florida and Stockton, California.

Moms who want to increase their job marketability and earning potential regardless of where they live should know that getting a college degree can help. Financial aid for mothers, college scholarships and grants can help make getting an education a reality.
