Be the role model your children can look up to

June 20, 2011

As a single mother, it's your responsibility to care for your children emotionally, physically and financially. If you've always struggled to have it all, yet when push comes to shove would do anything - even work multiple jobs - to give your kids all they need, it may be time to put that energy and effort towards going back to school. Many aspects of your everyday existence could change for the better if you earn a degree in a field you've always been interested in.

Here are a few reasons to go back to school to earn a degree.

1. Better your chances for a promotion. By pursuing a degree, your current job may reward you for your new achievement with a promotion within the company. Many businesses prefer to hire within the company as those who are already employed know the lay of the land and can adjust to new tasks more smoothly.

2. Make more money. According to College Board, just by having a degree, you will make $20,000 more a year, on average, than those without an education. Your degree will give you the opportunity to apply for higher paying jobs, which can help you make a better life for your family.

3. The ability to change occupations. Through earning your degree, you may be able to finally work in a field you've always wanted to be a part of, yet had to put aside to raise your children. It's never too late to go after your dreams and receiving your diploma is the first step.

4. Start prepping for the future. You won't be a working mom forever. Your kids will eventually move out and start lives of their own. With this added freedom, you'll have more time to focus on your work. By achieving an education, you'll be well on your way to possibly getting a higher degree, or just being able to really put your education to work for your company.

5. Be an example. When your kids see you working hard and studying to achieve your goal, you're further instilling in them a solid work ethic, while giving them a positive reason to be proud of you for not letting obstacles get in the way of your passions.

Be a role model for yourself and your children by proving to them that anything is possible if you want it badly enough. You don't need to go it alone, as many single parent scholarships, grants for parents and financial aid for mothers are available to make your dreams a reality.
