OSU offers online computer science program

April 25, 2012

As more adults utilize grants for parents and scholarships for mothers to seek a postsecondary degree, schools are providing more resources to nontraditional students who are furthering their education.

Recently, a new online baccalaureate degree program in computer science was announced at Oregon State University (OSU) to provide individuals with more learning opportunities, regardless of where they may be situated. The program will allow nontraditional students to use their previous education to improve their credentials and obtain further accreditation on their own time.

"The need for expertise in computer science has now become so pervasive that these skills can be paired with almost any other type of college degree, and it actually amplifies the value of both of them," said Terri Fiez, the head of OSU's School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science."

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in 2011, individuals with a bachelor's degree made an average of $1,053 weekly, compared to the $719 that people made every week with only some college education. With the help of grants for parents, more nontraditional students are being able to finish their schooling to embark on profitable career paths.
