Virginia students may now pursue nursing degrees online

Now that more grants for parents and scholarships for moms are becoming widely available, adults are continuing their education and making an effort to better their careers with a degree. In addition, accredited online colleges are making it easier for parents to obtain a degree while working and taking care of their children.

Recently, Virginia's Community Colleges and Western Governors University agreed to create an online degree program that allows Virginia students to earn a degree in nursing. Those who enroll in the program can save up to $17,000 a year in tuition by opting for this route to obtain a higher education.

"We are excited to be working with Western Governors University to create an affordable pathway to a baccalaureate degree," Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia's Community Colleges, told VirginiaBusiness.com. "And we think this could be just the beginning of our relationship with WGU. This could be a blueprint for offering similar baccalaureate opportunities in other high-demand fields such as information technology, business, and other healthcare-related programs."

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in 2011, those with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $1,053 per week. This is a notable increase compared to people with a high school diploma who earned $638 weekly.
