Student mom wins Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship

July 25, 2012

This July, mother of two and current student at Columbia Southern University (CSU) Kelly Dripps received a Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship.

Over the course of the year, CSU has presented 12 scholarships to family of U.S. military members and public safety personnel. Every two months, the school awards two relatives - a spouse or child - of these public servants.

Dripps, a recent recipient, won based on her essay submission. She and her husband chief petty officer Abelardo Dripps - a CSU student as well - live with their two children in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Both are pursuing hospitality and tourism degrees at the university. With the scholarship, Kelly Dripps' education costs will become easier to face.

"My education has been placed on hold for about 10 years because of the financial challenges of paying for a college degree," Dripps said. "This has been wonderful news to me and my family because now this scholarship will help me reach my academic goals of obtaining a bachelor's degree."

As a completely online university, CSU provides an alternative to the traditional college experience, allowing schedule shifting and self-paced programs that parents especially can appreciate. The flexible schedule and financial support will help students like Dripps achieve their educational dreams. Students looking for financial aid for moms can investigate the Hero Behind the Hero Scholarships and see if they fit the qualifications.
