A scholarship for adults in the Chicago area

July 25, 2012

A non-profit in Chicago is awarding five lucky adult students with $1,500 each toward tuition.

Resources for the Education of Adults in Chicago, or REACh, is a group of colleges, universities and corporations around the city providing financial aid for adults returning to school as well as information about educational opportunities. This scholarship aims to raise awareness about and support the growing number of adult students.

Applicants must be 25 years or older, enrolled in or admitted to a REACh member institution, show financial need and keep a certain grade point average. In addition to the application, a transcript, one letter of recommendation and a resume, applicants must complete an essay explaining what a college education will do for him or her.

This year, the scholarships went to one student with a pre-med and public policy concentration at Northwestern University, another majoring in physics at Elmhurst College and three others at Benedictine University and National Louis University.

"With the current economic climate, the REACh scholarships are more important now than ever," REACh President Scott Pfeiffer told Elmhurst Press.

The award will be presented annually, so those who missed the 2012 deadline can plan ahead for 2013.
