Reality star goes back to school at age 44

January 4, 2012

Actor and reality TV star Dean McDermott has enrolled in culinary school at the age of 44.

On a recent episode of McDermott's Oxygen network reality program "Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood" (with wife Tori Spelling) he toured the Art Institute of California before deciding to enroll.

The actor's first experience in the classroom was less than perfect, as he burned a frittata and didn't season it properly.

"I haven't been in school since 1985," RealityTVMagazine.SheKnows.com quotes McDermott saying on the episode. "I'm 44, going to cooking school. What am I doing? I have a third child on the way, we have a store to run. Should I be doing this?"

Wife Tori Spelling encouraged him to stick with his decision to pursue his dream. It turns out that she and their family is also enjoying the rewards of Dean's school work.

"He's been cooking every night," Spelling told Y98Radio.com. "[He makes] homemade pastas! Right now he’s in his pastry course, so he's making fresh croissants. I reap the benefits of his hard work!"

Like many people, McDermott clearly has a passion for something that could translate into a different career. He noted on the episode that he worked in a restaurant at the age of 19 and has been obsessed with food ever since.

While celebrities who choose to pursue a new career by going back to school may not have to worry about the financial commitment, others should know that various grants for parents, college scholarships and financial aid can help them make their dreams become a reality.
