It’s National Distance Learning Week

November 10, 2011

According to the U.S. Distance Learning Association, distance learning is the fastest growing segment of the education market. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reports that as many as 20 percent of college students are enrolled in at least one distance education, or online, class.

The ease and popularity of distance learning has made getting a college degree possible for many mothers who take online classes. Moms who are returning to college to pursue a degree can benefit from the flexibility offered by these types of classes.

Data from the NCES shows that students with children and those who are married participate in distance education classes or degree programs more often than other students. In total, 29 percent of students with one or more children and 32 percent of married students take at least one distance education class, in contrast to 18 percent of students who neither have children nor are married. In addition, the NCES reports that while 23 percent of all undergraduates are age 30 or older, 53 percent of undergraduates in a distance education degree program are in this age group.

Many parents returning to college to pursue a degree appreciate the flexibility online courses offer them. They can schedule class when it's convenient for them, such as when their children are sleeping or at school. In addition, individuals taking these types of classes are usually eligible for grants and college scholarships to help pay for their education.
