How to submit your best scholarship application

July 19, 2012

As a parent returning to university, financial aid for moms can be a great help, and applying for as many awards as you're eligible for may help your chances. But how do you make your scholarship form stand out from the rest? Here are a few quick tips to improve your application:

Choose carefully
When you select which scholarships to apply for, examine the requirements and then submit applications to those whose desired traits are ones you possess. You'll increase your chances of receiving an award if your characteristics are exactly what the organization hopes to find in applicants.

The same rule of careful selection applies when choosing the subject of an essay or brief response. Think about an anecdote or opinion you wish to express in your application, and write about whatever is the most meaningful to you. People tend to write better when describing something for which they have a passion, and this enthusiasm will come across to those who review the applications.

Stay organized
As you fill out several different applications, it's important to keep track of all your materials. Know which writing samples go with which form and keep copies of your pieces in case the sent application somehow does not reach the organization. Often, scholarship essays have similar topics, so if you save a version of one written piece, you could save yourself time later on and take cues from your own work.

Be honest
Just like when composing a resume, writing an application should be honest. Exaggerating your achievements could lead to an awkward conversation later on in the application process. As is usually the case, honesty is the best strategy.

Read and reread
Before you submit your applications, examine the instructions thoroughly to ensure that you have filled out every part of the form and done so correctly. Finally, reread your answers for errors. Simple mistakes are easy to catch with proofreading, and could make a difference when applications are reviewed.

If you search online and ask around, you can find plenty of scholarships for moms heading back to university. Fill out applications carefully and truthfully, and you could improve your chances of receiving aid.
