Finding a roommate for you and your kids

November 7, 2011

According to the National Association of Working Women, the average annual cost of child care exceeds the annual cost of public college tuition in 49 U.S. states.

Many mothers pursuing a college degree know first-hand how difficult it can be to go to school, as well as provide child care for their children and a place for them to live, even with the help of various scholarships for mothers and other financial aid.

However, moms who want to reduce their living expenses may consider finding a roommate to share housing costs with. A non-profit organization known as CoAbode helps connect single mothers in a local area for this reason.

Through CoAbode single moms can find compatible partners in any state to share rent, utilities, food, chores and babysitting. In addition to companionship, the service helps single parent families achieve a higher standard of living than is possible when going it alone.

"For me, there's been a tremendous sense of relief in house sharing with another mom and her child," a single parent who found a roommate with CoAbode said. "At the end of the day we get in there together and tackle what has to be done; you do the dinner, I'll help the kids get their homework done."
