Challenging economy provides a great reason for moms to go to college

November 15, 2011

Whether they already have a college degree or not, the difficult economy is the perfect reason moms should consider going back to college now.

Many women who are unexpectedly laid off, or who have spouses who have lost their jobs, are faced with the challenge of figuring out what's next for their families. Even those who are not out of work may realize that they are bored, unhappy and not working to their full potential. Oftentimes, these situations provide just enough motivation to start the path that will eventually lead to a better life - both financially and emotionally - for everyone involved: pursuing a college degree.

While the thought of going back to school as an adult can be scary for those with a family, upon researching the idea further, most quickly realize that the hard work and sacrifice will be worth it for them and their families in the long run. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, female bachelor's degree holders age 25 and older earned an average of 79 percent more than those who only had a high school diploma in 2009.

Whether you take in-person classes at a local university or online classes from the comfort of your own home, the availability of various college scholarships, grants and other financial aid has made it easier than ever for non-traditional students to make their dreams of going back to school a reality.
