Being a successful online student

December 16, 2011

While online learning is attractive to many mothers pursuing a college education, experts say virtual learning can be difficult for some people.

An online professor who writes for the website StudentsOver30.com says that students who are the most successful in this type of learning environment share a few attributes.

"If you are self-disciplined, excel at time management and feel prepared to ask questions, then you have a reasonably good chance of succeeding in an online learning environment," according to the website.

However, there are a few other considerations individuals researching online colleges need to make before enrolling.

First of all, online programs need to be accredited in order for students to qualify for federal financial aid. This means that you won't be able to get help paying for your education through various grants for parents and financial aid for moms if your learning institution isn't accredited.

Those who want to take online courses should also ensure they have the necessary equipment such as a computer with internet access. A high-speed internet line is preferred, as it is more reliable and faster than dial-up connections.

Having a back-up location to access the internet is also recommended, according to StudentsOver30.com. This is important since a connection is crucial to being able to learn. Possible alternate locations for online school work include a library, friend's house or internet café.
