Now that you’ve sent out your applications, it’s time to figure out how to pay for college

October 12, 2011

The college application process is a time-consuming venture, so you may not have the motivation to start researching college scholarships and grants. However, higher education is a significant expense and finding ways to cover the cost of tuition will help you avoid long-term debt down the road.

College scholarships are offered by corporations, charities and other organizations, and the earlier you send out your applications, the better. Many of them will also require an essay that gives a window into your educational aspirations, so you'll need to tailor each one to the nature of the prompt and the group that is offering the scholarship.

Grants are also a popular form of college funding, and they are offered at the state and federal level. Fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form to put your name in the running. These grants don't need to be paid back and can be a huge boost to cover your expenses.

There are many financial aid options that are there for the taking, but it will require hard work on your part to add them to your bottom line.
