Making the right choice when picking a degree program

September 22, 2011

When you've finally completed the college scholarship and grant process and you're about to craft your class schedule, don't be inclined to choose a major just yet! Picking a degree program is a huge decision that will be the basis for your entire college experience.

One way to decide is to picture yourself in your dream job and then work backwards to see how you can get there. Investigate the many avenues it will take to get you into the profession of your choice and whether a double major could increase your chances of making it happen.

On the other hand, if you're still a bit undecided, use your first semester to sample a number of different programs. A good rule of thumb is to narrow your choices down to three majors and then pick classes in each one. By the end of the academic period, you should begin to have a sense of where you would like to go with your education.

Choosing a degree program is a huge step, but by keeping your goals in sight and taking your time, you will find the field that suits you perfectly.
