Job outlook good for class of 2012
December 5, 2011
The hope of many mothers pursuing a college education is that a degree will help them launch a career they are passionate about and be better able to support their family financially. While the job market remains tough, there's good news for those who will graduate in 2012.
A recent survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) found that employers plan to hire 9.5 percent more graduates from the class of 2012 than they hired from the class of 2011.
Overall, those with business, engineering and technology-related majors are most likely to quickly find a job, according to NACE.
Students who participate in internships while they're in school are likely to have an easier job search.
"Class of 2011 graduates who took part in a paid internship were more likely to get a job offer, have a job in hand by the time they graduated and receive a higher starting salary offer than their peers who undertook an unpaid internship or no internship at all," according to a NACE press release.
Average starting salaries are on the rise as well. The average starting salary for members of the class of 2011 was $51,171, 6 percent higher than the previous year.
While a higher salary will help students repay college loans, those who had help financing their education through grants for parents or college scholarships won't have to worry about making payments.
