Best jobs for women

June 12, 2012

Some moms know exactly what they want to study in college, but others do a lot of research on the various degree options for mothers. While majors such as education and nursing have been historically viewed as good options for moms, there are others as well.

The Washington Post recently highlighted some of the best jobs for women. Jobs expert and author Laurence Shatkin researched hundreds of professions and weighed factors such as earnings potential, job growth and outlook and then highlighted those in which women make up more than 80 percent of the workforce.

While nurses, elementary and middle school teachers all made the cut, other professions were also ranked well. For instance, 96 percent of dental hygienists are women. These professionals make an average annual salary of $68,250 and job openings are expected to grow significantly over the next six years.

Other careers that moms may consider include paralegal, legal assistant, occupational therapist, home health aide, dental assistant and healthcare social worker.

While these professions are currently dominated by women, it's important to note that women can thrive in any career they choose. Those looking for help in choosing a good fit for their talents and passion can research careers on at BLS.gov or take an online assessment test to find one that may be a good fit for you.
