ARAG Chad Hensley Diversity Scholarship awarded to student mom

July 17, 2012

Hope Wood, the recipient of this year's ARAG Chad Hensley Diversity Scholarship at Iowa's Drake Law School, is not just an exceptional student - she also happens to be a mom.

Her award comes from ARAG, a global provider of legal solutions. Founded over 75 years ago, the company focuses on topics from education and empowerment to planning and prevention.

"We are proud to recognize Hope as the recipient of the ARAG scholarship," said David Murray, ARAG president and chief executive officer. "She embodied the principles on which the scholarship was established."

Wood, who enrolled in law school when her son was only seven weeks old, was selected based on her academic achievements, community service and personal commitment to supporting and inspiring other students. Exemplifying this last trait, Wood wrote a book about her experience as a mom at law school.

On her blog, Law School Mom, Wood shares her insights and advice as well. "Your life doesn't stop because law school starts," she writes. "And your life will only get more complicated after you get done with law school."

With this award, other scholarships for moms and Federal Pell Grants, many parents are able to pursue higher education without an overwhelming amount of financial strain. The support allows them to contribute to their communities as well.
