Working Mother names best companies for moms

December 19, 2011

Many mothers pursuing a college education hope to find a fulfilling, enjoyable and profitable job when they graduate.

Luckily, many U.S. companies are now offering working moms family-friendly benefits such as paid parental leave, on-site child care, flexible work arrangements, on-site fitness centers and even prepared take-home meals.

Working Mother magazine recently released the list of the 100 Best Companies for Moms, based on the benefits they offer their employees.

Included in the top ten are Bank of America, Deloitte, Discovery Communications, Ernst & Young LLP, General Mills, KPMG LLP, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLG, Prudential Financial, TriHealth and WellStar Health System. The complete list is available online at WorkingMother.com.

According to the magazine, the companies included in the top 100 employ 2.5 million people in 18 industries at more than 37,700 worksites nationwide. Of these employees, more than 1.2 million are women.

The list illustrates the fact that many U.S. companies value the fact that employees need to achieve a good balance between their work and their lives. For moms in college, the list may serve as a tool for what they can expect upon entering or re-entering the workforce after graduation.

While paying for college can be a challenge for some mothers, there is a wide variety of college scholarships, grants for parents and other financial aid available to help offset costs and make it affordable.

The investment is likely to pay off. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), in 2009, the average salary for adults ages 25 to 34 with a bachelor's degree was $45,000, while those with a high school diploma or other equivalent degree earned an average of $30,000 per year.
