Tips for writing a college scholarship essay that sets you apart
August 15, 2011
As a mother who has made the decision to head back to college, you have a lot to consider, but securing funding for your schooling should be at the top of your list. There are countless college scholarships for mothers and grants for parents available, and your scholarship essay will help you set apart from the competition.
Your scholarship essay shouldn't read like a list of your accomplishments, rather it should provide a window into your world that isn't apparent from your resume. First and foremost, you must communicate why you're going back to school and how your goals align with those of the organization providing funding.
If you were in a tragic accident or had to overcome a lot to get to where you are in your life, by all means mention it. Character is an important quality that scholarship committees look for, so demonstrate how you have grown and your ability to meet any challenge. Lastly, ask as many people as possible to read your essay for constructive criticism that could improve it further.
