Specific schools offer scholarship benefits for single parents
December 5, 2012
It can be difficult to manage daily finances and long-term goals, and the added challenge of being a single mother can make college untenable for some women. There are plenty of financial resources available to assist individuals with getting into quality schools and increasing their earning potential, and finding these tools is as easy as going online.
Looking for options
Certain educational institutions give out single mother scholarships in order to ensure this group of students is cared for, as many colleges offer financial aid opportunities to all their incoming pupils. The Blossom Nursing Assistant Training School in Kent, Wash., is one such entity that provides annual funding assistance specifically for moms trying to balance work, children and educational opportunities.
The Kent Reporter wrote that single moms can get up to $2,000 per semester directly through the school. The application process is as simple as filling out a form online, the source stated. As a new school in the region, Blossom Nursing is hoping to help provide educational benefits by offering scholarships for mothers, as well as flexible training schedules and online courses for those who need to be home caring for children during the day or are trying to find additional outside employment.
"Nowadays many heads of household are single moms who have the desire to go back to school," school president Doris Akinlosotu told the Reporter. "But often times [they] cannot fulfill that ambition because of a lack of funds to realize the inspiration."
Earning potential
As a n industry, nursing has seen a constant demand for employees, even retaining strong hiring figures during the recession. The Lake City Reporter wrote that, due to the relatively short training period required to get certified, nursing assistants and other similar professional positions are popular with single moms, because they can start earning faster. The source wrote that earning potential, even for moms on their own, can double after completing post-high school education.
The Blossom Nursing Assistant Training School provides more financial aid for mothers than just its dedicated single mothers award. The school's website has a number of internal resources for additional support, as well as local businesses and charities that have a history of providing students with assistance in managing tuition and class-related expenses.
