Seasonal hiring could help college moms with scholarships
November 1, 2012
Looking for employment but trying to balance a family and school at the same time can seem difficult. There are a lot of different options for single mother scholarship holders, from work-at-home positions to hourly retail spots that offer the kind of flexibility a single mom needs. Many of these can even be found online, meaning there's no need to get a babysitter and go out job hunting. Employment could be just a click away.
Balancing act
Single moms have felt how hard it can be to keep school and kids in equilibrium. However, getting a job could be crucial to staying on track with finances, so finding a position that works with these other obligations is the most important thing. The holiday season acts as a booster to these ambitions, since children will need holiday presents, and even mothers who already have a job could find themselves running short on bills.
Obtaining seasonal work has been the solution for many, even for those who are already employed elsewhere. These positions offer flexible hours, overtime pay and valuable work experience that will help her once she graduates from college and tries to start a career.
The holiday season is also a great time to look for jobs. A recent survey by research firm Aon Hewitt said that its annual holiday hiring survey found 80 percent of hiring managers felt seasonal staff was the way to go. The bright spot for single moms with college scholarships is that, while many of these positions are temporary, those interested in ongoing employment may find that one in every four jobs is full-time regular.
Finding the right position
A number of different sectors expect to be hiring in the near future, but most of these positions will be in retail. There are still a variety of job titles available within a single organization, so those seeking security or accounting jobs should not count out these positions just yet.
What's more, a study by the National Retail Federation reported that more than 500,000 positions will be created this season. Part of this is due to consumer confidence, but another section of the argument is based on unemployment figures. Higher confidence means more spending, but without more jobs, confidence won't follow suit. Single moms with college scholarships need to be mindful that these position can be flexible and assist them in caring for their families. As long as they are open with their employers about availability, single moms will likely be able to work out scheduling compatible with child care and maintenance of a college scholarship.
