Scholarships help single parents pay for college
November 2, 2011
Whether they decide to pursue a college degree online or in person, many single parents worry about how they'll pay for their classes.
While many federal and state grants exist to help those returning to school fund their education, scholarships for parents are also plentiful.
In Arkansas, for example, the Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Northwest Arkansas (SPSFNWA) awards more than $300,000 in scholarships each year to more than 100 recipients to help them pay for their education and related living expenses.
The SPSFNWA, which is now accepting applications for the Spring 2012 semester, reports that the financial help these scholarships offer aid single parents in many ways. A recent study of recipients who have already graduated finds that they have increased rates of home ownership, higher incomes and higher rates of full-time employment.
According to the Carroll County News, there are 65 single parent scholarship fund affiliates in Arkansas alone.
Single mothers who want to increase their earning potential by going back to school to get a bachelor's degree or master's degree are encouraged to research scholarship and grant opportunities in their area to make their dream a reality.
