New scholarship acknowledges single-parent financial needs
July 10, 2012
The SR Education Group announced today the launch of their new Single Parent Scholarship program, which will award lucky recipients with $2,000. The scholarship will be given out six times a year.
The company created this scholarship for single parents because studies show that 28 percent of single-parent families in the U.S. live at or below the poverty line. For these moms and dads, the thought of spending money and taking time off from work in order to go back to school may seem impossible.
"In addition to financial challenges, we are struck by the fact that single parents have an enormous level of responsibility yet very little support," said Nathan Grimm, spokesperson for the new program. "The statistics say that many single parents end up in a vicious cycle of poverty. We want to help break the cycle."
In order to apply, applicants must answer three open-ended questions about how a degree would help their children, specific personal or family circumstances and their intended major and career path. The answers must be thoughtful and well-written, and finalists are chosen by a panel of judges.
The SR Education Group also awards a need-based scholarship of $2,000 to female college students, known as the Women's Scholarship. This can be another valuable scholarship for moms or other females having trouble raising funds for their education.
