Financial assistance helps moms outside of class

December 11, 2012

It can be hard to focus on classes and studying when stress is riding heavily on someone's shoulders. Considering all the burdens a single mother has to bear, its no wonder that many of them may struggle to complete higher education. While financial aid for moms is readily available at some colleges and universities, not all will help them find help paying utilities, assist them with getting to and from school every day or find them good childcare programs. Fortunately, though, there are some scholarships that specifically target single moms.

Programs across the country are in place to help mothers navigate the complex web of attending school, finding better employment and caring for children. Tapping into these resources can provide them with a strong support base, both economically and financially.

Different kind of utility
The Indy Star wrote that single moms in Indiana will soon be receiving additional tuition assistance, as well as grants for much-needed free childcare. These resources are available to single moms with college scholarships, as they're meant to assist those gaining higher education or making a better life for their families. Part of the Women's Fund of Central Indiana, $15,000 in state money went toward putting older kids in the Boys and Girls Club of America program, while an additional $25,000 was allocated to providing free childcare for moms in school. By making sure that children of all ages are being watched, cared for and nurtured while mothers are in class, parents can more easily focus on their studies and worry less about taking care of their families.

Outfit to win
Getting through school is just one aspect of public assistance when it comes to financial aid for moms. With all the financial outlays associated with running a household and caring for children, there isn't always money left over for moms to outfit themselves with the tools they need to succeed. On top of a college education, they also need clothes that present them in the best light.

USA Today wrote that some regional programs are helping single moms get used and new professional outfits for free. These donations come from a variety of sources and are disseminated to needy women through the AbleWomen Career Closet in Fort Collins, Colorado. With some single moms getting over divorces and other simply struggling to get by on a daily basis, getting quality clothing for free can be a huge relief, and a sign that other women care about their struggle.
