What to say on your college scholarship application

September 12, 2011

College scholarships and grants are one of the most sought-after forms of college funding available, so making your application stand out from the rest of the pack is vital. Think of your application essay in the same way as a college admissions piece - you should communicate your hopes and dreams and how higher education will make them a reality.

Try to avoid writing a glowing piece that lists all of your accomplishments. Not only is this something the committee will have seen plenty of times before, but it doesn't give the reader insight into your goals or your career aspirations.

Keep your essay grounded in a story or life experience that has led you to pursue higher education. This will give the readers a view into your life and be able to put a person behind the essay.

Lastly, for the many organizations that offer scholarships, you'll want to tailor each piece to say something positive about them. It's a tiny adjustment that may just win you the funding you need to pursue a degree program.
