Be a better mom by earning a degree

July 15, 2011

Life is filled with stress no matter who you are, but for single mothers, it may often feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. You need to parent as both the mother and father figure, as well as be the breadwinner for your family to make sure everyone's needs are provided for.

If you had children young and therefore missed your initial opportunity to attend college, this could be the time for you to consider giving it another go. This could be a way to earn a better living and show your children that no matter what, you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it.

Just because you're a bit older doesn't mean you wont be able to thrive in your courses. Having to jump into the working world at a younger age may have actually better prepared you for college than those going in right after high school. You've already gotten down many of the skills needed to succeed at the college level. You know to be on time, as you've had to be on time for work and make sure your kids got to school everyday; you know about hard work, as you've had to make sacrifices and pick up extra shifts to keep your family afloat. And you know what? You most likely want it more, as you don't view college as a time to go out and party, you view it as your opportunity to get ahead in life once and for all.

Although your life will definitely change, as adding one more component to your already full schedule will take some time to get used to, know that your children will support you every step of the way.

The cost of college is high, but there are places to turn to that want to help you achieve your dreams. Once you've chosen a school, look into financial aid options to see if you can get the cost down to a manageable price. If you need a bit more shaved off, look into college scholarships that you may be eligible for to get you on the right track. Take this time to feel great about yourself, as earning a degree is sure to make you smile.
