Embrace your opportunities – once you’ve raised your children
June 21, 2011
If you're one of the millions of people who chose to sacrifice dreams of college to raise your children, now might be the time to go after the goals you gave up so long ago. If your kids are grown and out of the house, there's never been a better opportunity to go back to school and finally make your desires a reality.
In a recent article from the Bucyrus Telegraph Forum, one mother talks about making the against-all-odds decision to go back to school to earn her diploma. This mother of seven had her children right out of high school, leaving little time to attend college. Once her kids were able to fend for themselves, she spoke with her husband and decided it was her time to fulfill her dream of going back to school.
Like so many mothers, she explains that she had no idea what she wanted to study or what she was even good at. While in her first math class at school, her teacher told her she had a real knack for numbers and she decided to pursue a degree in the subject, specifically teaching.
No matter what you decide you want to go back to school for, know that it's truly never too late to continue learning. In this case, this woman decided teaching was best for her - something you might enjoy as well, as you've most likely spent a good portion of your adult life educating your children on countless issues, from proper hygiene to studying for exams.
Talk with your children about your interest in going to college, as they may be able to help you fill out applications, and even study. By including them, you may again be teaching them the importance of going after what they want and the need for hard work. Your example to your children may benefit them in more ways than you think.
Making ends meet is a concern for many, yet options are available for women in your situation. Research the best college scholarships and grants for parents out there to be able to afford school without breaking the bank. Raising a family doesn't mean you need to sacrifice your wants and desires. You only have one life to live, so embrace what you want and you'll teach your children to do the same. Remember, anything is possible with hard work and dedication.
