Take a non-credit course to get a sense of your career goals

October 27, 2011

Choosing a career can be a lasting decision that can affect the rest of your life, so it's vital that you are 100 percent certain about your chosen field. If you've been mulling over the prospect of going to college to earn a degree, it's advantageous to know what your major will be before you set foot on campus.

Entering college undecided is not the ideal option, but it can certainly work to narrow down your choices. Give yourself a semester or two to take a number of classes in varying disciplines to find out what works for you. However, this may mean that your degree program will take a bit longer to complete, since you'll be working outside of your major for a time.

On the other hand, before you apply for a single college scholarship or grant, you can take a non-credit course at a local university. Most of these classes last only a few weeks and they will give you a taste of what a specific field has to offer.

Whatever you choose to do, picking a major is a huge decision, so consider every avenue to make a well-informed decision.
