Program for adults with Down syndrome aims to expand under new management

A continuing education program for adults with Down syndrome in Colorado is switching hands, but still providing educational opportunities to those with the condition.

Mile High Down Syndrome Association, which has served Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region for 31 years, is taking over the ALIVE! continuing education program, which stands for Ability, Life Skills, Independence, Vitality and Education. For the past five years, it has been run by the Denver Adult Down Syndrome Clinic.

"MHDSA is continuously increasing its educational programs offerings, and by overseeing the ALIVE! classes, we will directly impact the needs of adults with Down syndrome now and well into the future," said Mac Macsovits, executive director of MHDSA. "We plan to expand the program and the service area to include not only the Denver area, but the western slope, and northern and southern Colorado."

ALIVE! is currently a weekly educational program that teaches life skills. There are scholarships for adults with Down syndrome available, and this financial assistance will continue under MHDSA's management.
