Being realistic about your career choices

October 28, 2011

Mothers who are heading to college to pursue a better life for their families have a lot to consider when choosing a potential career. There are so many factors that can influence their decision, so it's best to sit down with a career counselor to find out exactly what their working life will look like.

First and foremost, you need to ask yourself if you want to be placed into a stressful, intense environment. Many people enter careers and then are shocked to find that the responsibilities that come along with it are too great. If you're more accustomed to working behind the scenes than being at the forefront of a business, it's best to be honest with yourself.

A work-life balance is another aspect to consider. If you have children to look after, it may not be prudent to work in an intensive field that demands all of your time. If you need that extra time to unwind or spend with your kids, choose a career that will make that happen.

Before you take the dive into a new career, be sure to investigate the many college scholarships and grants that are available to reduce the cost of your tuition.
